Get your fitness routine on track this autumn

Get your fitness routine on track this autumn

It’s that time of year when the children are back at school, the nights start drawing in and the memories of sunny days seem a distant memory, but as these changes take place it’s a great time to set health goals for the months ahead.

During summer we can all get a little lazy with our exercise routines, with summer holidays, eating out and socialising. Autumn is the perfect time to reset and get back into some kind of routine.

First, take stock of your current fitness level and decide what you want your goals to be for the coming months. Losing weight can often be a motivator, but it’s important to look beyond this and take things gradually, building up your fitness regime. Making a few small changes can make a big impact and there is no need to burn yourself out in the process!

Start small. You can begin by adding a small amount of movement to each day and build on that. This may mean stretching, going out for a short daily walk or doing an exercise routine you find online.

You can also create some clear space for exercise; perhaps a corner of a room or the garage – just somewhere you can clear your mind and focus on your fitness and wellbeing.

It may be a little early to mention Christmas, but by getting fitter now you will be in a great place to enjoy the festive season and not be under too much stress about your fitness levels come January. You will be able to fully embrace and enjoy the festive period with little or no guilt! Imagine that?

Get outside as much as you possibly can. Being outdoors is good for the soul and will instantly energise you. Go for a family walk, a cycle, a wild swim, or try yoga outdoors.

Another good way to get motivated is to join a group; perhaps a walking, cycling or running group, or sign up to a charity run or event. Get a few family members or friends to join you and you will all have great fun along the way.
