As a personal trainer I am often asked when the best time of the day to exercise is: morning, afternoon or evening?
It’s a topic that is often debated, but in my view the answer is clear: when you can.
Working as a personal trainer I am acutely aware that everyone has time pressures, be those dictated by work, family or other commitments, and regardless of the time you have to work out there are many health benefits associated to moving regularly. It improves the health of your heart, your body and your mind.
So, while science may say that there is an optimum time of day to exercise, I would always advocate that making time for some exercise is better than not doing so, whatever time of day it is.
If the only time of the day you have free to exercise is before going to work then this is best for you. Similarly, if you only have a free slot in the evening, then that is best. If it means you get regular exercise, then that is key, and it also ensures you will stick to it.
There has been much research carried out into the optimum time to work out and according to a lot of studies morning workouts come out top. Reasons include that it can help move your circadian rhythm making your body more alert in the morning and more tired come the evening, meaning you fall asleep earlier and also that you have deep sleep. It is also shown to burn more fat and that the afterburn lasts longer. Other cited benefits are that it can make you more productive and boost your mood.
Exercising later in the day also has benefits though, with research showing that most people function on a physical level better later in the day, and your body is warmer. Exercise is also a great way to relieve the stress of the day, and it can be a great thing to do in place of sitting watching television.
The way I see it is that you do whatever suits you, and if you are not managing to fit exercise into your life, perhaps you need to mix things up and try something different.
