How to stick to your New Year fitness resolutions

How to stick to your New Year fitness resolutions

Oh we all know that feeling of great optimism, self-belief and enthusiasm when we set targets and resolutions for the New Year and exercise is a prime one; we all set out with great intentions, but how often do our best-set plans quickly fade and our fitness regime falter?

As we leave 2021 behind us and head into 2022, resolutions around getting and keeping fit abound – it’s said that fitness resolutions are the most popular among those making resolutions for the coming year. It is also said, however, that very few people ever actually fulfil their resolutions and a large percentage have given up on them by the second week of February. Not that impressive is it?

If you want to stick to fitness resolutions, and let’s face it there is little point making them if you don’t intend to give it your best shot, then it’s important to think carefully about any resolutions you do make.

Be specific

Set yourself a specific fitness goal and then you may find it easier to achieve. The more specific you are the better. Do you want to tone or build muscles, improve your endurance or rid yourself of some fat? Also consider why you want to achieve this.

Set small milestones for yourself

Break down your main goal into achievable steps; this way you will be more motivated and find the process kinder and easier.

Write down your goals

If you write down your fitness goals it not only makes them more real but also acts as a reminder of what you are trying to achieve and why.

Keep things real

There is no need to go for the burn; it’s more important to be consistent when it comes to exercise. Set realistic goals and exercise so that you actually enjoy it.

Keep track of your progress

By logging your progress you will feel good and see how far you have come. It’s a great motivator and allows you to keep an eye on how you are progressing towards your goal and to make any necessary modifications to your fitness regime.

Team up with a training partner

Exercising can be tough on your own so if you are struggling try and find a training partner who helps push, encourage and support you in your goals.

Listen to your body

Don’t push yourself too hard and listen to what your body is telling you. If it’s hurting then take a break.

Do what’s right for you

We are all different and it’s important to exercise in a way that suits you and to have your own specific goals. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else.

Enjoy your training!

You’ll stick to your fitness resolutions better if you actually enjoy what you are doing and don’t find it all too much of a bind. Have fun and you are more likely to achieve your goals.
